Manage client email templates

Whether you're reselling Campaign Monitor or have independent departments set up as separate clients in our application, one of the first things you'll need to do is set up email templates. Below, we'll explain how template management works, and how clients access templates to create emails.

Email template options

The two main template options are custom coded designs, which incorporate our template language, and email builder templates, which require no coding on your behalf. These are explained in more detail in our guide to setting up email templates.

Both email builder templates and custom HTML templates can be used to create:

Client access to templates

After you've created or imported a template in a client, it gets added to the client's saved templates. When setting up one of the email types listed above, people added to the client can select the saved template from My templates on the "Choose a starting point" page.

After they've created their first draft email, they'll also see a "Recent emails" link. This gives them the option of starting new campaigns from a saved template or the last campaign they sent.

If people in your client are assigned standard client access, they will not be able to edit the templates you create for them, only use them for sending emails. In combination with section locking in email builder templates, this can be a great way to ensure a template's design and content are kept within guidelines.

You can optionally give people full client access or "build or import their own templates" permission, which allows them to create and edit templates. This will give people in your client access to the "My Templates" section of their account, which is otherwise only accessible to account administrators.

Add a test client to your account to use as a test environment for new client templates. When you're happy with how it looks and works, use our copy templates to other clients feature to make it available to your intended client.

User guides for your clients

Only administrators can see this topic, but people in your clients do have access to our email templates topic, regardless of what permissions are applied to their account.

If your clients aren't creating their own templates, point them to our topic on the email builder if you've created email builder templates, and the custom template content editor if you've coded your own.

Template management

To make changes to your client's saved templates, click Clients in the top navigation, then select the relevant client. Open the Settings menu near the top right and click on Templates. You'll see a thumbnail image for each saved template, with its name below.

Template thumbnail previews

Click the menu icon below the thumbnail image to display the template tools menu:

  • Edit — Opens the template for editing.
  • Copy — Creates a copy of the template. Useful if you want to make a minor variation to an existing template to use it for a different purpose.
  • Copy to other clients — A quick way to create a similar template design for a different client. Also useful for copying final draft designs from a test client to the real client, to prevent them seeing it before it's ready.
  • Export — Downloads a copy of the template. This option is only available for templates that are custom HTML templates.
  • Create campaign — Start a new regular or A/B test campaign using this template.
  • Delete — Removes the template from your account. This won't affect previously sent emails, but it will impact draft emails and any active journey emails or smart transactional emails based on the template
