Account and client API keys

Many of Campaign Monitor's features are accessible through our RESTful API. To make API requests, you will need to authenticate using an API key or oAuth.

To view API keys, you must have verified the email address associated with your account. If you can't find your original verification email, please contact support.

Where to find your API keys and client IDs

To locate your API keys and client IDs:

  1. Click your profile image at the top right, then select Account settings.
  2. Click API & integrations in the left sidebar to view the page that holds your API keys and client IDs.

Click Show API key to view your API key. If you haven't generated one yet, click Generate API key instead.

The administrator API key has access to your entire account, including all clients. It's wise to limit API access to individual client accounts wherever possible, by using their client API key instead.

Client API keys

The API key page also lists API keys for each of your clients. These keys limit access to the relevant client's data, and aren't accessible to individual clients in their account. Each client's client ID is also accessible from this page.

Change an API key

You can change account or client API keys within our application. Also known as API key rotation, you would usually do this for security reasons.

After you've generated a new key, the old one will remain functional for 24 hours. This is to give you time to update your integrations and applications to the new key.

Before you change an API key

API keys are vital for external applications and integrations to communicate with Campaign Monitor. If you're running integrations or sending email using our API, and you're not familiar with the technical side, find the person that set up Campaign Monitor or your integrations, and ask for their help before you make the change.

How to change an API key

To generate a new API key, replacing the old one:

  1. Click your profile image at the top right, then select Account settings.
  2. Click API & integrations in the left sidebar.
  3. Click Show API key next to the client you want to generate a new API key for.
  4. Click Generate a new API key.
